Armored truck spills $1 million on the highway
Wow, money is neither grown on trees nor falls from the sky, rather it gets spilled on the freeway for the people passing by making it one big lucky day to cherish for let’s say a week or maybe a month. An armored truck spilled its trove on a California highway Friday, sparking a cash-grab frenzy that resulted in two arrests, authorities said.
According to online reports, the truck had an incident last week, spilling bags of cash all over the road, allowing passers-by and surrounding cars to take advantage of the situation. They carped their diem like proper opportunists, and viral videos of legends grabbing their surprise payloads flooded the internet.
California Highway Patrol Sergeant Curtis Martin had a bit of a yarn to The San Diego Union-Tribune and he reckons one of the truck’s back doors came flying open on the highway and a few bags of cash tumbled out the back. “One of the bags broke apart, and there was cash all over the lanes,” he said.
“This is the most insane thing I’ve ever seen,” Bagby says in the video. “San Diego has shut down, literally it has shut down.”
The driver of the armored truck tried to retrieve the cash — before realizing how futile his efforts were — and then began recording those taking the money.
Thousands of dollars are estimated to have spilled out on the highway.
Jim Bettencourt, to state that “If you stop to pick up money, as many people as videoed the scene, you can possibly be facing charges,” he said.
Law enforcement is demanding that anyone who took money from the road return it immediately. It’s not clear exactly how much cash was taken.
“If you found money on the freeway, it is not your money,” CHP Sergeant Martin said at an afternoon news conference. “It belongs to the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) and this armored truck and the bank. It needs to be returned.”
As a result, a large number of people returned their ill-gotten gains to the police station later that day. However, nearly a million dollars was thrown out of the truck, and it’s unclear how much of it has been returned.
